The meaning of true charity
The small pieces of change carried in the purses of those living during Jesus’ time reveal the basic tenets of Judaism and Christianity. Smaller than a penny these tiny bronze coins depicted no portraits, since graven images were abhorrent to a large part of the population who followed the second commandment. These coins are the basis of the Christian parable of the “WIDOW’S MITE” as told in the New testament which teaches the meaning of true charity.
Jesus sat down opposite the treasury… Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two mites which are worth a penny… “truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of those were contributing to the treasury… She out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to leave on” (Mark 12:41-44)
